Who Needs a Hygienist Anyway??

A guide to why you need your hygienist
Annie Lutterman

I’ve been cleaning teeth for 5 years now and a question I often get is “If I brush my teeth twice a day and floss every night like you say, then why do I have to show up here?”  I understand why that might be a concern. What could a hygienist possibly do that you cannot do at home with your own toothbrush, toothpaste and floss?  Well let’s just say that exact question puts a smile on my face.

There is a lot we can do. Not only does a hygienist clean teeth- we care for your all around oral health. We do an oral cancer screening, check for decay not easily seen (or felt) in the mouth, check bone levels and gum health. Seeing a hygienist on a regular basis allows the patient to take preventative approach to oral needs rather than a reactive approach. Preventative measures include x-rays, oral cancer screening, cleaning and an exam from Dr. Zollinger.

A toothbrush does a great job cleaning the surface of your teeth. The floss cleans well between the teeth. When plaque and saliva calcify it becomes tartar build up. That’s that hard stuff we scrape at. That is the tough stuff your brush and floss do not stand a chance against. Tartar build up must be mechanically removed.  Gum disease is also painless. Most adults who have gum disease did not know until told so by their hygienist. Gum disease can lead to tender gums and eventually tooth loss.

Maintaining a healthy mouth is teamwork.  If you do your part at home and see your hygienist regularly you can avoid serious dental problems. Plus, wouldn’t it be nice for your own peace of mind?? Stop in today!!

  1. I just read Annie's post and I liked it. I was very fearful when I stepped in to Advanced Family Dental. I had not seen the dentist in years. I had so many questions going through my mind. How bad are my teeth and gums? How many cavities did I really have? I want braces. What will the expense be? Are the chips on my front two teeth repairable?? These were questions I had always asked myself, but ignored going to the dentist. I always blamed life getting in the way. I have never laughed or smiled so much in my life at a dental facility as much as I did at Advanced Family Dental. The ladies at the front desks were personable and friendly, my hygienist, Annie, was AMAZING. Her co-workers would step in and say hi, even though they weren't cleaning my teeth.I adored the friendly atmosphere. It made me feel comfortable in a place where many people don't feel comfortable. I met the orthodontist. She was wonderful. Very ebullient and also personable. My question about braces was answered the first day I was there. Lastly, I got to meet my dentist Dr. Zollinger. He has the greatest personality and sense of humor. I ended up not getting braces and had a different procedure done to my teeth. He is very good at what he does. You definitely have to be an artist to do what he did to my teeth. I have a wider, more happier smile thanks to Dr. Z and the wonderful staff at Advanced Family Dental. :)

  3. I've always been amazed at the work hygienists have been able to do regardless of the fact that I brush and floss every day. They have an ability to get the spots you can't. Granted, I haven't been to the dentist in years. I really need to start seeing one again. Hopefully I can find a good one soon! http://www.totaldentalcaresi.com
