Is your Mouth REALLY Healthy???

Most of us know that home hygiene habits are a good preventative measure to keeping your mouth in good health. It is true that people who brush and floss regularly are less likely to suffer problems associated with decay and gum disease.  As a hygienist, I evaluate my patient’s oral health and make suggestions to improve their home hygiene routines.  Brushing twice a day and flossing before bed are great ways to take good care of your teeth, but keep in mind, there are several other things a hygienist can do for you that you may not even be aware of.
Coming in regularly for your cleanings allow our hygienists to do an oral cancer screening, assess the health of gum tissue, and remove debris. We also take x-rays in order to catch decay at its earliest phase to avoid doing bigger work.

Did you know your toothbrush can remove plaque but only your hygienist or dentist can remove tarter??  Plaque is soft and can easily be removed by the soft bristles of your toothbrush. Tarter is harder. (It rhymesJ) When plaque calcifies, it becomes tarter. A tooth brush and floss cannot remove tartar build- up. When you come in for your dental cleaning your hygienist will remove this tartar with special instruments.
Bleeding while brushing and flossing is a cause for concern. Bleeding indicates inflammation and infection of the gums.  Tender and/or bleeding gums can even indicate serious infection which can lead to tooth loss.  Your hygienist will evaluate your gum health to catch any problems early.

Here at Advance Family Dental, we are on your side. We want to assure you get the care you deserve, while educating you on the importance of dental health.

  4. We just had our second kid and i have really been thinking a lot about their health lately. I didn't have the privilege to see a dentist regularly and to keep my mouth healthy. I really want my kids to have that privilege and to have healthy mouths. How do I tell a good family dentist practice from a bad one??

  5. I think that having a healthy mouth is something that is very important. I think that most people don't really think about oral health as much as they maybe should. I didn't know that a toothbrush can remove plaque, but only a hygienist or dentist can remove tarter. That is one of the many reasons I think it is important to go to the dentist regularly. Thanks for sharing this great and insightful information.

  9. This is a real eye opener for me because I thought I was pretty good at keeping my teeth clean. With this new year started, I want to make sure that my kids start it off with clean teeth. I want to take them to the dentist and make sure that everything is good. We all haven't been to a dentist for about a year now and I think that it is time that we all get a check up and a good cleaning.
