Top 5 reasons people put off going to the dentist and how to solve them

One to the main reasons people avoid the dentist is:  Fear

People have many different fears associated with going to the dentist.  We listen to our patients and hear that many are afraid it’s going to hurt or that they will get harassed by the dentist for not coming in often enough.  We find a lot of fears can be associated with bad childhood experiences with the dentist.  This is one reason we strive to make sure kids have pleasant visits at our office.

How we deal with fears:

You can control your experience here

If you are afraid because you’ve had a bad experience in the past or if you think we are going to cause you pain, we will work with you to make your experience as enjoyable as possible. We will explain everything you need done and why. If you need to just talk for your first visit and get to know us, that’s fine. We will help you work through your fears until you trust us enough to work on your teeth. We are very patient people here at AFD and want to ensure a positive experience for you.

The truth about pain

The truth is about dental pain is that most people who have pain come in to the office already in pain.  We help to fix it.  However, a lot of people associate the treatment with the pain. Dr. Zollinger is very skilled at giving pain free injections, and with the new technologies in dentistry we have the most advanced systems that allow treatment to be faster and pain free.

No judgments in our office

If you are embarrassed to come in because it has been a long time since your last visit, please don’t let that stop you.  You may think you have bad teeth or that they are a lost cause but that isn’t how we see things. We only focus on the fact that we are glad you decided to come to our office. We look at how we can help you get to a place where you are healthy and proud of your smile and we will never make you feel bad about what has happened in the past. Dr. Zollinger is the best at solving dental issue’s that may seem hopeless and he loves to see his patients keep their own teeth for their lifetime.

Stay tuned for the #2 reason people put off going to the dentist: money

  1. I have been guilty of putting off going to the dentist at times. I'm definitely worse off when I do this. It is best to just go and keep up with your visits.

  6. I feel like another problem people don't go to the dentist is also timing. They don't think about what they plan and forget to reschedule the visit. With our family dentist they call us a week before to remind us about our visit as well as leave us a card from the last visit. It is hard to remember that you have a time set up, especially when you have a lot going on.

  7. Thank you for the great reminders about the dentist office. I used to be terrified of going to the dentist but, you are right. most people go in with more pain then they leave. I was always numb after I left the dentist. If you take better care of your teeth then you will not have to get cavities filled or have a root canal. http://www.havendaledental.com

  8. I've been helping a friend of mine look for a quality dentist, but neither of us know what to look for. There are so many things to look for in a good dentist, and with there being so many dentists around, it's hard to know to choose one that's right for you. Things like this help though, and I hope that we can find one soon.

  9. Thanks for the great post. I'm defiantly one to put off my dental appointments, and this post defiantly shows me that it's really not something to fear. Now I just need to work on gathering enough courage to actually go, because really there's nothing to fear about the dentist.

  10. It's true, a lot of people don't go to the dentist because of how painful some of the procedures can be. It's especially scary for children. That's why I'm looking for a family dentist who knows how to make going to the dentist less frightening. They need to get a few procedures done soon before their teeth gets worse. I hope that I can find a family dentist soon.

    1. You're definitely right about it being scary for little kids. Children aren't as used to the dental experience as adults are. I've been reading books to my kids about going to the dentist to get them ready for their first trip. I'm still looking for a dentist right now, but hopefully I can find one soon. I really like what the article said about coming in and getting to know your dentist first. Maybe that's something I'll do! http://www.childrensdent.com/contact-us/burnsville-office.aspx

  11. I think at some point in peoples lives, we all put off going to the dentist for fear of having work done. I know I've put off going to the dentist because I didn't want to have it hurt. I've learned that it's better to go to the dentist than to put it off, because the problems don't go away. http://www.dameliodmd.com

  13. I've been having trouble finding a good dentist to take my son to because he's so scared of going. I know there are places out there that put a lot of effort into making their patients as comfortable as possible. All I need to do is find one that my son feels best about so he doesn't have to worry so much about it.

  14. I think my main problem is putting off the visit to the dentist. I always tend to forget that I set up a time to visit the dentist. This even happens to my kids. I will set up a time and we will forget it and have to reschedule because we planned something important at the same time. What can I do to remember my appointment?

  16. I think it is super important to go to the dentist. My parents always made us go to the dentist even though most of the time we didn't want to they made us go. Now that I am older I can see that it is necessary to go and I am glad they made us go all those years because now we have clean and healthy teeth. http://www.familydentisthuntingtonbeach.com/Dental_Care_Huntington_Beach_CA.html

  18. I think it's important to avoid putting off dentist appointments if at all possible. It's incredibly difficult to have healthy teeth if you don't regularly get them checked. There really isn't any reason to put off a health related thing. I hope people do whatever they can to consistently visit the dentist.
